I was considering it because my extended family is in Ladysmith, so I COULD go home for Christmas and run the race, but neither are very appealing in their own right.Karenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01212228308225991239noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4310602445997472344.post-12394107542780633062013-03-20T23:55:16.272-07:002013-03-20T23:55:16.272-07:00Oooh. I like Tuscobia because I can see all my local runner friends there and because there's a great guy in Park Falls who hosts the race and lets all us racers hang out at his restaurant for the weekend, but it's hard to put into words just how boring the course is. The most wilderness you're going to get is a couple of short stretches that are maybe 2 to 3 miles off the road. Most of it is indeed either running through someone's backyard or next to the highway. On the other hand, sometimes there is a good line of trees between you and the highway and if you try hard, you can almost pretend you're in the wilderness... Is it all developed areas or is it part wilderness too? I'm worried after running Alaska's Little Su, I'm going to be disappointed about running next to highways and on easements through someone's yard.Karenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01212228308225991239noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4310602445997472344.post-8059459830123256842013-01-10T18:42:52.158-08:002013-01-10T18:42:52.158-08:00Staring at the trail's vanishing point is no f...Staring at the trail's vanishing point is no fun. If all goes well, maybe I'd think about ITI later. And don't worry, I won't approach ITI as a race--I'm too slow of a walker for that to be possible even if I wanted to!:)

In other words, if you ever want an Alaska winter trip buddy, I volunteer...Alicia Hudelsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08920162593427542080noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4310602445997472344.post-36196195006979526492013-01-09T19:00:13.390-08:002013-01-09T19:00:13.390-08:00I felt much the same way at Tuscobia. And a little baffled too; the reason I love these ridiculous sled-dragging slogs is precisely because I *like* slogging. Races that are a hundred percent runnable are the races that are not for me. :-)

Anyway, I completely understand your feelings about the ITI, but in my experience it's really nothing like an ultra. Even the winter ultras I've done. It's much more like an expedition, like climbing a big mountain or trekking across a wilderness. You're less likely to experience your usual ultra woes (such as nausea) and more likely to encounter issues you never anticipated. But approaching it from the expedition mindset, rather than a competitive mindset, is the best chance of success.

Good luck with the rest of your season! But being a runner, I know going to a race you want to run and not running is hard! I hope Tracy is strong! ;)Katiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06399320835082431959noreply@blogger.com
